Document No. 10 – Diabetes:

This document serves as a practical guide to those who wish to achieve holistic health through complementary and alternative therapies by treating the “system” not just to suppress the symptoms or “quick-fix the problem”.  If you are unsure if these remedies are appropriate for you, please carry out necessary research before using them.

1.  Okra (Bhindi or ladyfinger) Latin name: Abelmoschus esculentus:

Apply vertical cuts with a sharp knife on four Okras.  Insert them in a large mug filled with boiling water.  Let them soak overnight for about 10 hours.  In the morning squeeze them and extract the juice and the seeds.  Throw away the Okras and drink the gooey liquid in the morning.
Okra helps to stabilise the blood sugar by curbing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5



2.  Garlic: Latin name: Allium Sativum.

Maximise the use of steamed Garlic.  It helps to regulate blood sugar. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5



3.  Prickley Pear:

Drink the smoothie made out of Prickly Pear puree added to grape or apple juice.  The blood sugar lowering action of prickly pear cactus has been documented in scientific studies. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5


4. Tindora or “Ivy Gourd” Latin name: Coccinia Indica:

This vegetable is found to contain isulin-mimetics properties (i.e. it mimics the function of insulin).  Significant changes in blood sugar have been reported.  Ideally use this vegetable row or mix it in salad. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5

5.  American Ginseng Latin name: Panax quinquefolium:
Ginseng roots are hailed as “cure-all” and reported to decrease fasting blood glucose. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5


6.  Karela “bitter melon” Latin name: Momordica charantia:

Karela is reported to have the ability to help diabetics with insulin secretion.  Karjuice may be taken early in the morning. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5

7.  Holy Basil “tulsi” Latin name: Ocimum sanctum:
Tulsi as a medicinal herb is employed in traditional Ayurveda.  It enhances the functioning of beta cells and facilitates the insulin secretion process.  http://bit.ly/eYp9p5

 8.  Genugreek “Methi” Latin name: Trigonella foenum graecum:

Methi is a part of Ayurvedic treatment and is known to improve sugar level.  Eat a table spoon of sprout methi every morning. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5

9.  Jambu or Jambul Latin name: Syzygium cumini:

All parts of Jambun is used medicinally and it has a long tradition in alternative medicine.  Its seed is used in Ayurveda to control diabetes. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5

10.  Cinnamon:   Latin name: Cinnamomum zeylanicum:

Cinnamon has therapeutic effect of type 2 diabetes.  Ingesting a half teaspoon of powdered cassia per day significantly reduces blood sugar in diabetics. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5



11.  Madhu-Nashina, Gurmar (Ayuvedic medicine) Latin name: Gymnema:

Helps to regulate blood sugar and controls sugar craving.  This medicinal plant has been used in India for hundreds of years and has positive effect for curbing diabetes by blocking sugar binding sites and hence not allowing the sugar molecules to accumulate in the body. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5


12.  Kala Jeera (Sahadevi), Methi (Fenugreek) and Ajwain:

Lightly roast and then grind a mixture of the following herb seeds:

20 gm Kala Jeera

50 gm Fenugreek

10 gm Ajwain

13.  Ayurvedic Medicines and Herbs:

Following Ayurvedic food supplements are beneficial in Diabetes:

  • Arjuna
  • Ashwagandha
  • Guggal
  • Neem
  • Turmeric
  • Shilajeet

14.  Body Massage:  A regular oil massage will maintain a healthy blood circulation keeping muscles strong, flexible and toned.  The oil I suggest is almond oil ideally mixed with essential oils such as rosemary or lavender. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5


15.  Doodhi, Lauki, Gia, bottle gourd Latin name: Lagenaria Vulgaris:

16.  Amla, Indian Gooseberry (Ayurvedic medicine) Latin name:  Emblica officinalis:

Amla juice mixed with a cup of bitter gourd juice has been recommended by naturopaths for its properties of stimulating the Pancreas which secretes insulin for reducing blood sugar.  It also reduces blood cholesterol levels. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5


17.  Wheatgrass Latin name: Triticum aestivum

Wheatgrass is perhaps the most nutritious and cleaning juice there is.  It is claimed that it can prevent diabetes and heart disease.  Drink a glass of wheat grass juice every day. http://bit.ly/eYp9p5


18.  Aloe Vera (“Healing Herb”):

Eat either Aloe Vera gel or make a smoothie out of fresh leaves.  Aloe vera juice and gel are traditionally used to treat diabetes.  It has proved to reduce blood glucose levels and cholesterol.

A mixture of any or all of the four juices mentioned above (i.e. Wheatgrass, Doodhi, Amla and Aloe Vera) may be mixed to create a dynamic juice with has unique and potent remedial qualities ideally when taken regularly.


19.  Healthy substitute for caffeine:   Substitute tea and coffee for herbal tea made from fresh herbs such as amla, tulsi/basil, ginger, turmeric, lemon, mint and cranberries.  (Please refer to my document on preparing herbal tea and the medicinal benefits of each of its constituents.)


20.  Sauna & Steam:  The temperature changes help to rejuvenate mind and body by relieving stress.  The benefits are:

·         Increases body metabolism

·         Beneficial in asthma and arthritis
